Amjad Bashir MEP today said the UK should respond with caution to the publication today of the European Union’s draft guidelines following the triggering of Article 50.
The Conservative MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber said: “It was always inevitable that this process would start with talks about talks and negotiations about negotiations.
“Mr Tusk is talking about a phased approach, but there is no reasons why different phases and processes should not overlap and progress in tandem. That is what happens on any good project management grid.
“Discussions will begin with the terms of our separation, but they will not end there.
“We are in the very early stages of a long and tricky process. We would be wise to to treat all apparent encouragement and all attempts to set pre-conditions with equal caution and polite persistence.”
