Amjad Bashir, Conservative MEP for Yorkshire and The Humber, has welcomed today’s announcement of a deal by Tata Steel to sell its Scunthorpe steel works as a going concern.
He said: “This is quite simply the best news Scunthorpe has had in years.
“It means not only that 4,000 jobs jobs there are directly secured, but we can now breathe more easily over more than 30,000 jobs in the supply chain and the wider economy that depend on the plant.
“To lose steel in Scunthorpe would rip the heart from the town. If the price of saving the jobs is a modest pay cut and changes to pension arrangements, I think the workforce will consider that a fair exchange.
“The EU has sat on its hands when steel needed defending, but in the end Scunthorpe has fought its own battles and won through. This a massive vote of confidence in the future of the plant, the town and our region.”
