Conservative MEP Amjad Bashir today condemned a move by Brussels to target Britain over new rules to protect our hauliers from unfair competition.
He spoke out after the EU Commission launched a legal challenge over Britain’s introduction two years ago of a road toll for trucks driving to Britain from Europe.
Britain introduced the toll in April 2014 after complaining that British truck drivers faced similar costs when delivering goods in Europe.
Mr Bashir, MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, said: “Our toll is legitimate and fair. This legal action is another example of how the EU wants it both ways and will always try deny the British an even break.
“Our lorries pay a fortune in tolls to drive in Europe because that is how those countries fund their road-building. You can’t get far off the ferry in France without having to pay a toll to get anywhere.
“Then they expect to send their lorries here without paying a penny to use the roads we built through our taxes. They want to have their gateaux and eat it.
“It is completely unfair to our hauliers and our taxpayers. I expect our Government to give the threat short shrift in its response.”
